An idea for UCI: Team Omnium

Whilst thinking a little about the omnium it occurred to Cyclostats that a Team Omnium would make a good addition to a World or Olympic programme. It would certainly be better than padding out the timetable with needless rounds in the Team sprint and Team pursuit. It would be a little similar to the concept of the team competition in gymnastics, for example.

The event could follow the same format as the individual event but could perhaps end with a madison instead of a regular points race. Points would be awarded on the same basis as the new omnium format, and the countries with the most points take the honours.

Teams could be picked from riders picked for other disciplines and there could be flexibility in terms of how many riders can be used. This way, smaller countries could lean on one or two stars to carry them.

Just for fun, here’s how we think a GB Team Omnium might line-up in Rio.

Men

Scratch: Mark Cavendish

IP: Bradley Wiggins

Elimination: Peter Kennaugh

Flying lap: Jason Kenny

Kilo: Callum Skinner/Kian Emadi

Madison: Kennaugh/Cavendish

Women

Scratch: Laura Trott

IP: Jo Rowsell

Elimination: Laura Trott

Flying lap: Beck James

500m: Jess Varnish

Madison: Kate Archibald/Trott

Two more golds for GB please!
