Matt Gibson’s inclusion in the GB squad for the upcoming World Championships in Paris was the only true surprise among the 19 named by British Cycling.
Gibson has been seen as a rising star for some time but has yet to crack 4:30 for the 4km individual pursuit. This is likely to be a trip for the experience but he might yet have a shot at forcing himself into the Olympic squad.
The only other mild surprise is Matt Crampton’s omission from the Team Sprint squad, where Callum Skinner and Kian Emadi are chosen as the Man 3 options. The two younger men are clearly on the rise so it will be interesting to see whether this marks the end of Crampton’s long international career in which he never quite reached the heights that were once thought attainable.
